A nativity scene and menorah are gone after causing controversy at the Luzerne County courthouse.

The American Civil Liberties Union threatened to sue if the displays were not removed.

The actual manger was taken off the lawn outside the Luzerne County courthouse Thursday morning.

As for the rest of the nativity scene and the menorah, all of that was taken inside Wednesday night and is in the the basement of the courthouse. Read More

ACLU axes nativity, menorah

A familiar nativity scene and menorah were removed from the Luzerne County Courthouse lawn Wednesday night because the American Civil Liberties Union threatened to get a restraining order.

The ACLU argues the displays violate the separation of church and state clause of the U.S. Constitution, DeLuca said.County Solicitor Vito DeLuca said a Pittsburgh lawyer from the ACLU contacted him Wednesday to give the county an opportunity to remove the items before it filed court action that was already in the works. Regarding the Luzerne County Courthouse Display

I am Justin Vacula, a third-year student at King’s College in Pennsylvania, a member of the NEPA Freethought Society, and an American citizen. I have recently alerted the ACLU about a religious display at the Luzerne County Courthouse. Its display of a crèche (Nativity Scene) and Menorah are unconstitutional; governments are not permitted to endorse religion (Establishment Clause) nor are they allowed to put up these displays. I seek no reward for this pursuit; I merely want the unconstitutional religious displays removed in order to uphold and defend the great constitution of our nation. Read More
